On Wednesday October 8, 2014, Civil Rights Policy Fellow Danielle Caron connected with UConn’s Human Rights Institute at their showing of the film Freedom Summer. Freedom Summer (2014) is a documentary film that premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The film shows footage from the summer of 1964, when student activists – both white and black – traveled to segregated Mississippi to help the excluded African American population with voter registration, create freedom schools, and establish the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.
Professors Glenn Mitoma and Kathryn Libal led a short discussion after the film about “seeing Civil Rights as Human Rights.” The CHRO looks forward to getting involved with the Human Rights Institute and attending future film showings at the University of Connecticut.
